49ers-Jets Inactives: McCaffrey a massive surprise absence

The season opener is finally upon us. And the drama is not over. With 49ers-Jets is less than two hours away, the 49ers made a shock move, inactivating Christian McCaffrey.

McCaffrey told reporters this week that he would play, as did general manager John Lynch. He was listed as questionable and limited all week with a calf/Achilles injury. It's the Achilles part of that injury that is incredibly concerning. In his stead, Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo will take most of the workload. Patrick Taylor Jr. is also an option, but is largely a special teams option.

He joined the following list of inactives:
RB Christian McCaffrey
QB Josh Dobbs
LB Dee Winters
CB Darrell Luter Jr.
S Talanoa Hufanga
OL Ben Bartch
DE Yetur Gross Matos

The Jets have the following inactives:
OL Max Mitchell
RB Israel Abanikanda
T Carter Warren
TE Brenden Bates
DL Eric Watts
DL Leonard Taylor
CB Jarrick Bernard-Converse

Earlier in the day, the 49ers activated Trent Williams. Williams' holdout gave the 49ers the ability to place him on the reserve/did not report list. They had an exemption to use on him, but had to add him to the active roster by Monday. They cut veteran tackle Brandon Parker in a corresponding move.

They also activated both defensive end Sam Okuayinonu and veteran safety Tracy Walker with Gross-Matos and Hufanga both out.
