49ers cornerback Jason Verrett has suffered another devastating injury, tearing his Achilles in Wednesday's practice, the team announced Thursday.

Verrett, who was expected to provide a big boost to the 49ers secondary after being activated off of the physically unable to perform (PUP) list two weeks ago, will now miss the rest of the season.

Verrett sat out of the first eight games of the season while recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in 2021, and it was expected that he would return to the lineup as early as this Sunday against the Chargers.

San Francisco was counting on Verrett to step in for cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury earlier this season.

Due to a variety of injuries, the 31 year old has only appeared in 39 career games after being selected by the Chargers in the first round of the 2014 draft.

Verrett played 13 games in 2020, the most he'd played since appearing in 14 games with the Chargers in 2015. A torn ACL limited him to just one game last season, and another torn ACL limited him to five games in 2016 and 2017. A torn Achilles cost him the 2018 season, and an ankle injury limited him to just one game in 2019.
