SAN FRANCISCO (95.7 The Game) - The San Francisco 49ers selected Trey Lance with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, signaling a new era in the franchise.
However, it appears we may have to wait a little while before we see Lance actually hit the field -- at least according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, who told reports that the team's incumbent starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, is still the team's No. 1 option heading into the season.
“There’s no open competition, where they’re getting equal reps with the same group,” Shanahan said. “Jimmy’s coming in as the 1, Trey as the 2.”

They may not sit well with 49ers fans, who have been yearning for a change at the position for quite some time now.
After all, Garoppolo has struggled with his consistency over the years, especially in the last two seasons.
To his credit, Garoppolo did lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance in 2019, albeit behind a superstar defense.
Despite the detractors, however, Garoppolo is ready for the challenge.
"When [the Lance pick] initially happened, there's a million emotions that go on throughout your head. You think of all the possible scenarios and things like that. But at the end of the day I want to play football, I want to go out there and win games—it's what I do," Garoppolo said in May.
