Training camp is winding down. The 49ers haven’t worn pads for the past two days of practice, with the preseason finale lurking Friday night in Las Vegas, at the scene of the Super Bowl-losing crime.
Wednesday was the final day of practice before that return to the desert. Here’s what’s worth being aware of.
Injury updates: RBS return, vet OL out half the year (or more)
Let's start with the bad news. Kyle Shanahan subtly mentioned that veteran interior offensive lineman Jon Feliciano is out for half the year. He underwent knee surgery and the 49ers' plan appears to be to put him on injured reserve the day before roster cuts and return him later, as it appears they also intend to do with Kalia Davis.
Talanoa Hufanga, meanwhile, won't practice this week, but Shanahan said if all goes well, he could be eased back into practice next week.
Ricky Pearsall didn't practice this week but was running full speed during Wednesday's practice on a far field. It's a matter of when his shoulder is ready for contact. We have no timeline for when that will be.
As for the returns, Spencer Burford made his way back into individual drills Tuesday, but remains out of team period. Ben Bartch returned in full.
At the running back spot, the 49ers got all three of Elijah Mitchell, Jordan Mason and Isaac Guerendo back. Guerendo looks like he can gallop. It's worth keeping an eye on. Mitchell had a fumbled exchange with Brock Purdy Wednesday but also looks like himself.
Practice report
This is a roundup of practice from the past two days. Take it all with a grain of salt because the 49ers haven't worn pads. That's an innate disadvantage for offensive linemen.
Tuesday's practice was a relatively underwhelming one. The clear highlight was a deep ball down the left sideline, a dime from Brock Purdy over Deommodore Lenoir, and well caught by Robbie Chosen.
Wednesday had a bit more to offer. Lenoir, by the way, has played well and stopped a touchdown in the red zone period on a quick Purdy pass to Chris Conley.
Nick Bosa had at least four would-be sacks and just continues to dominate. He seemed to single out Robert Beal Jr. and coached him up for the vast majority of practice on hand placement and technique.
Guerendo continues to look intriguing, while Mitchell's fumble and a failed pop pass to Deebo Samuel (recovered by Dominick Puni, but technically a pass) were a low point. Purdy was frequently under pressure from Nick Bosa on either side, but also found George Kittle a few times. One ball for Kittle was broken up well by Ji'Ayir Brown, who continues to ascend.
Purdy had a would-be red zone touchdown to Jacob Cowing broken up by Renardo Green, who continues to make a compelling case for the second outside corner spot in nickel packages.
He had a missed, wide-open connection to Jordan Mason for a would-be touchdown. Mason leaked out and was uncovered, but dropped a ball that Purdy threw towards his back shoulder instead of leading him. Mason ran in a score the next play.
Tanner Mordecai had a couple of completions, including his best of camp -- a dart to Jacob Cowing on a deep crosser -- negated by false starts from his tackles on either side. He had another ball for Tay Martin broken up by Samuel Womack.
Josh Dobbs ended the day with a touchdown run, then a wide open touchdown to Cowing, who continues to show up all over the place.
