There’s no question that Brock Purdy is QB1 for the 49ers this season, but QB2 is still to be decided.
On the first edition of the 49ers depth chart released by team public relations on Tuesday, the second-string quarterback was listed as “Trey Lance OR Sam Darnold.”
Longtime Bay Area sports reporter/host Guy Haberman joined Al Sacco and Brian Renick on the latest 49ers Webzone “No Huddle” podcast this week and gave his thoughts on Lance and Darnold’s improvement so far in training camp.
“I don’t know if Sam Darnold looks any better playing for Kyle Shanahan than he did look playing for anybody else,” Haberman said. “Yes, I think Trey looks better. And yes, I think we’re just judging what we have seen in training camp, I think him and Sam have been neck and neck. I think it’s pretty equal in terms of their performance to this point, based on what we can judge.”
Perhaps one of the signal-callers will separate themselves this weekend, as Purdy is expected to sit out while Lance and Darnold lead the offense against the Las Vegas Raiders in the preseason opener.
Haberman said he’s been impressed with Lance’s development entering his third NFL season.
“I do think he looks better,” Haberman said. “I think his throws are crisper. It’s not that he never throws a wobbly ball, but I think he throws less of them. I think from an intermediate throw standpoint he looks really good. None of the 49ers quarterbacks consistently hit the deep ball, partly because 49ers receivers don’t consistently get open on go balls. … But, yeah, I think Trey looks better I do.”
