You might not be well acquainted with the rich tapestry that is above-replacement-level interior offensive line play, but you're about to be. The 49ers announced Monday that they re-signed interior offensive lineman Ben Bartch to a one-year deal.

Bartch played effectively a game and a half for the 49ers last season, starting with a relief appearance in Green Bay, a full game in Buffalo, and a start against the Chicago Bears. In that short stint, he was outstanding. That's not hyperbolic. He was a noticeable, monumental upgrade over what the 49ers got from Aaron Banks last season.

He was graded as the team's fourth-best offensive lineman (in a near tie with Jaylon Moore for third) by Pro Football Focus, but you didn't need that data to notice the difference in run game displacement and pass blocking competency.

After Bartch went down with an ankle sprain against the Bears, there was a tangible sense of disappointment in the locker room. It registered as more substantial than typical recognition of an injury. Bartch leveled up the offensive line, and it was noticed.
