Oren Burks is a linebacker, but during punting formations last season he lined up as the left guard for the Green Bay Packers. He was on the field for the 49ers’ epic blocked punt touchdown that swayed the game, even briefly putting his hand on Jordan Willis before the big fella got his paw on the ball for the block.
Well, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. The 49ers announced Burks’ signing Thursday and it marked the team’s first official signing since the 2022 NFL league calendar on Wednesday at 1 p.m. PT.
“It was a tough way to lose in Green Bay, but I'm on the other side of things now,” Burks said. “I'm excited to add value to this organization here."
Burks, who turns 27 on Monday, is eager to establish himself as a special teams ace.
"For my career, that's been something I can hang my hat on,” Burks said. “I've kind of gotten some notice around the league for that. So definitely being a leader on special teams and competing to play linebacker and add value to the team wherever they feel fit.”

In 17 games last season (three starts), Burks totaled 36 tackles according to Football-Reference. Burks lives in the Nashville area and said he has worked out with George Kittle over the past couple of offseasons. Burks also knows 49ers linebacker Fred Warner dating back to their 2018 NFL Draft prep days.
"Me and Fred were in the same draft class, so we went through the Senior Bowl and combine, all those good things, so we kinda connected there," Burks said. "I actually just ran into him a couple minutes ago. I'm excited to get to work with him. He's a great dude. He's been a leader for this team on defense his whole career honestly. I'm just excited to play next to him."
Even though Burks’ main role will be on special teams, he’s eager to learn from defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans.
"I've heard nothing but great things about DeMeco," Burks said. "I know he's a linebacker guy, so I know he's going to be a great communicator in terms of what I need as a linebacker coming in. The players really rally around him. It's a great defense, and I'm excited to get to work."
