49ers signing former Giants corner who declined pay cut [report]
The 49ers are adding a new corner to their ranks according to multiple reports. Dan Duggan of The Athletic first reported that the 49ers are signing former Giants corner Nick McCloud to their practice squad.
This comes after McCloud reportedly refused to take a pay cut. He was on a one-year, $2.985 million contract signed as a restricted free agent on the lowest-level tender.
McCloud was not a defensive starter for the Giants, playing on defense in six games this season, some on the outside, some in the slot.
He missed weeks two and three of this season with a knee injury, but has otherwise been a key special teamer for the Giants. He received, for whatever it's worth (it's not worth much) as 63.0 grade from Pro Football Focus on special teams, which is decidedly mediocre. He had a 50.1 grade on defense which ranks... 112 out of 119 qualified corners. Renardo Green, it should be noted is second in the league with an 84.2 grade.
As a practice squad addition, it may not be all that notable, but McCloud is just 26, and the Giants saw fit to give him a deal worth nearly $3 million this offseason. It's a higher-profile practice squad move.
