The 49ers lost kicker Jake Moody for the foreseeable future after Moody suffered a high ankle sprain making a tackle Sunday during a kick return. Amongst many others, that play came back to cost the 49ers, who were left with Mitch Wishnowsky as their only kicking option. He made a chip shot 26-yard field goal but didn't have much range beyond that.
San Francisco worked out four kickers Monday, and has decided to sign journeyman kicker Matthew Wright, according to The Athletic's Matt Barrows. Wright has appeared for five teams in the NFL, and was on San Francisco's practice squad last year.
In two stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs and Carolina Panthers, Wright, a former undrafted free agent, has gone 40-of-47 on field goals with a long of 59, and 35-of-37 on extra points.
Wright also has a lowly 28 percent touchback rate compared to Moody's 65 percent touchback rate, so that could be an issue for the 49ers on kickoffs, and potentially having a higher return rate with Moody out. It was a kickoff return and poor coverage that got him hurt in the first place.
