The 49ers are on a short week of preparation heading into Thursday night’s matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, so coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters earlier than usual on Monday morning.
Just about 18 hours removed from Sunday’s 35-7 win over Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Shanahan didn’t have much new information to reveal on quarterback Brock Purdy or his banged-up defense.
According to Shanahan, Purdy strained his left side while stretching for a first down attempt on a scramble on the team’s second drive of the game.
Later on Monday afternoon, the 49ers told reporters that Purdy was day-to-day with an oblique injury. Deebo Samuel suffered an MCL sprain and an ankle sprain that caused him to exit early Sunday, but he has a chance to return in regular season, so the 49ers dodged two major bullets.
Deebo seemed to be upbeat with the news, as he sent out the following tweet once the info went public.
San Francisco’s secondary will be shorthanded for the Seahawks, as Dontae Johnson suffered a season-ending ACL injury, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and cornerback Samuel Womack is out due to concussion protocol. The 49ers already lost starting cornerback Emmanuel Moseley to an ACL injury earlier this season and are keeping an eye on Ambry Thomas’ ankle.
The defensive line also got dinged up Sunday, as Kevin Givens and Kerry Hyder both suffered injuries. According to 49ers, Givens suffered an MCL sprain, meaning he’ll likely be out a few weeks. Shanahan sounded optimistic about the severity of Hyder’s ankle injury.
“Just talking to him after the game and everything, I believe if the score was different he would have been able to go back in,” Shanahan said. “That is a good sign, but I do expect Kevin to be a little bit.”
The 49ers are already short on the interior of the line, as Hassan Ridgeway is dealing with a pectoral muscle injury. Arik Armstead has played the past two games after dealing with foot/ankle injuries and the team is still awaiting the return of Javon Kinlaw (knee), who could have his injured reserve return practice window opened up after the Seahawks game, per Shanahan.
