Baldy: 49ers found a starter for 'the next 10 years' in Dominick Puni
Few people know offensive line play like Brian Baldinger. The legend joined the Morning Roast as he does every week to break down the 49ers' win over the New York Jets.
Amongst other things, Baldy loved what he saw from No. 77, rookie right guard Dominick Puni. In short, the 49ers won't have to worry about that spot for a while.
"He just is as much as you can be a natural at right guard," Baldinger said. "He's just a natural. He looks like he's played this game for five years. He doesn't make a mistake. He doesn't get beat."
Baldinger highlighted one play in particular, when the Jets singled him out against Quinnen Williams. Puni said after the game he felt like the Jets were targeting him.
"In fact, it was play in the game Joe, where they literally put C.J. Mosley on the center, and they wanted to isolate Quinnen Williams on Dominick Puni in a pass rush situation, on a third-down pass rush," Baldinger said. "They wanted their $100 million dollar man one-on-one with the rookie, and they got him. And all we did was just stand tall and anchor down and not let Quinnen beat him. Now there's not many guys one-on-one that Quinnen can't beat in this league. And when I saw Puni stand up to Quinnen like that, I'm like, that's about as good an early test as you can get. That's that."
He raved about Puni taking "great angles," apired with "great power." In short, the 49res have their right guard for the long haul.
"They move the line of scrimmage, and Puni's a big part of that," Baldinger said. "They're not going to get him out of that. That's his position for the next 10 years, like he is the right guard for the future. There's nobody who's going to come in to take that job from him. So they found themselves a starter in the third round. And it's just amazing, because you can't in four games now, you can't find a bad play from him."
