The consensus in the National Football League over the weekend appeared to be that the San Francisco 49ers were deciding on whether to use the No. 3 overall pick on former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones or former North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.
Apparently, one former NFL general manager isn't buying it.
On Tuesday's edition of "PFT Live," Mike Florio said that an unnamed former NFL general manager strong believes that the 49ers will select former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields with the third overall pick.
"Hey, I got a former GM insisting that it's Fields...insisting that it's Fields...which is stunning to me."
It should be noted that Florio gave no indication that's what he believes will happen, so this doesn't appear to be a case of a reporter running with questionable information a few days before the NFL Draft. Instead, it's just something that's been opined by someone that seemingly doesn't have anything to gain or lose based on the selection. We'll see if his prediction comes to fruition.
Monday, Peter King of NBC Sports reported that he heard over the weekend that the 49ers were deliberating between Jones and Lance, with Jones having a 60-40 edge at the time. ESPN's Todd McShay said something similar, reporting that the 49ers will decide between Jones and Lance, with Kyle Shanahan more keen on Jones, but the team's personnel department high on Lance.
If it ends up being Fields to the 49ers, this would be perhaps the greatest smokescreen in NFL Draft history. And frankly, it feels unnecessary when you consider that Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson are seemingly locked into the top two sports.
