Garafolo: Aiyuk wants to stay with 49ers, 1 more extension detail 'needs to be ironed out'
It sounds like a resolution is coming to the Brandon Aiyuk situation. Earlier Tuesday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that the 49ers had trade terms in place with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that they also had an offer on the table to Aiyuk, who was unsatisfied with it.
Later in the day, Rapoport's colleague Mike Garafolo reported that Aiyuk wants to stay with the 49ers.
"Brandon Aiyuk would prefer to stay with the 49ers and has always preferred to stay with the 49ers, all things being equal," Garafolo said. "Now, they haven't been equal. But they did make that offer. In fact, both sides sent proposals within the last couple days, week or so, and the 49ers' number has gotten better than what it was previously. My understanding, they have agreed on a lot of the main points of the deal. Their offers are in line, but it sounds like there's just one more thing that needs to be ironed out. If that thing gets ironed out, Aiyuk signs the deal and stays with the 49ers."
Garafolo made very sure to exclude exactly what that one thing is holding up the deal. A wild guess? Money.
It's clear that while both sides have wielded their respective leverage, neither one seems to really prefer a trade. In the end, despite all of the nonsense that has gone on this offseason, a reunion could be in the cards.
