Greg Cosell explains why 49ers likely won't trade for receiver

The 49ers are going to have to lean on a crop of mostly young wide receivers this week, with Ricky Pearsall the biggest name. And that name is one Greg Cosell is a fan of.

No one watches more tape than Cosell, and he joined Willard and Dibs Wednesday. He explained why the 49ers likely won't make a move in the wide receiver trade market.

Cosell was asked specifically about the Carolina Panthers' Diontae Johnson as a trade candidate, and pointed instead to Pearsall.

"[Johnson is] a quickness receiver more than a speed receiver. He would probably, just with his traits, fit well," Cosell said. "But, don't know if they're looking for a receiver. They just got Pearsall back. And I thought Pearsall running routes look pretty juicy this week. So he's only going to get better. What that means in terms of production? No one can answer that, but I thought he looked pretty quick running routes, plus he's got some physicality to him. There were a couple of times he was pressed and he ran through the press. So I'm really anxious to see him play more, which he will obviously, because Aiyuk's not there."

The other part of adding a receiver in the middle of the season is getting them up to speed. With that as a calculation, Cosell isn't sure the juice is worth the squeeze.

"Then you get into a system that is that has a lot of parts to it, and I don't know Diontae Johnson at all, but the system has a lot of parts," Cosell said. "Is he a guy that's going to come in and be able to play at a high level right away? You would think is not likely. Just because he's got some some athletic traits doesn't automatically mean he's going to step right in and be a really good player. And it's always easy to say, 'Let's get another guy,' but it's the middle of the season. That sometimes is not as easy as everybody thinks."

Cosell said he was "anxious" to see more of Pearsall this week, and indicated that he loved him as a prospect. Listen to the full interview above.
