Michael Irvin isn’t putting much stock into Trey Lance being left off the six-man list of 49ers captains for the 2022 season, as announced by coach Kyle Shanahan Wednesday.
The Hall of Fame receiver Irvin joined 95.7 The Game’s “Damon & Ratto” Wednesday to explain why he’s not bothered by the second-year starting quarterback being excluded from the veteran-laden captain’s core.
“They choose some guys that have been there a while and put in the time and all the hard work, and they’re a captain,” Irvin told hosts Ray Ratto and Whitey Gleason (filling in for Damon Bruce). “Trey Lance is still a young guy who’s still learning. Trust me, whether he has a 'C' on his chest or not, Trey Lance is captaining the team because he's the quarterback. The 'C' on his chest that’s no indication that he isn't a leader.”
