'It's almost like too obvious' — Chris Simms explains how Jimmy G could return to the Patriots

By many accounts, it seems like the Patriots ideally would land Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason and he would be their starting quarterback for 2021.

In order for that to happen, the 49ers would need to add another quarterback, who they view as better than Garoppolo, and then either trade or release the veteran QB.

On Monday’s PFT Live, Chris Simms explained how he believes things will play out.

Simms looks at the Jets and new offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, who has his brother Matt coaching in Green Bay with Aaron Rodgers. Zach Wilson is reported to be similar to Rodgers in terms of skillset and Simms believes LaFleur sees it and would push the Jets to run the same offense with Wilson. This would mean selecting Wilson at No. 2 overall.

That would mean moving on from Sam Darnold and Simms believes 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan likes Darnold enough to trade for him, and there’s connections between the two franchises with Robert Saleh now being the head coach of the Jets.

Obviously, that would mean the 49ers do not need Garoppolo anymore, thus making the Patriots a likely destination.

“When you connect the dots right there, it’s almost like too obvious not to think it’s going to happen, honestly,” Simms said.

It is worth wondering the timing of all this, as the Patriots cannot afford to wait deep into the offseason as there’s no guarantee of it all playing out.
