Rice says Sherman’s comments ‘could be a rallying call,’ not a ‘distraction’

49ers legend joined The Morning Roast for his weekly conversation

Days after Richard Sherman told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco that “it's not looking likely” that he’ll be back next season with the 49ers, Jerry Rice joined The Morning Roast and discussed the impact those words could have on his old team.

Rice paralleled the situation to the ending of his own tenure with the 49ers.

“It’s hard because I thought of myself as always not leaving the Niners,” Rice said. “That’s where everything started for me. That’s where I wanted to retire and I never wanted to play for another team or anything like that but I still had a lot of football in me, so.”

"Richard Sherman is really going to have to decide," Rice explained. "I think he still has a lot of football in him, if it's going to be with the Niners or if it's going to be with another team."

Sherman and the 49er are set to host the Bills on Monday Night Football, from their defacto home, the Arizona Cardinals’ State Farm Stadium.

"That could be a motivating factor for him because he got an interception last week, and I think he's a big factor in that secondary," Rice continued. "And I think, with his experience, he brings a lot of knowledge, and he helps those younger guys to get in position to where they can make plays.

"So, this could be a rallying call. I don't think it's a distraction or anything like that, but it's Monday Night Football, and it's time to go right now, guys."
