Kyle Shanahan offers updates on Jimmy Garoppolo, Trey Lance

Brock Purdy fever has taken over the Bay Area, but the other two 49ers quarterbacks are healing up.

During a press conference with reporters Friday, coach Kyle Shanahan offered updates on Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance.

Coach Kyle Shanahan also said that the team is hoping Jimmy Garoppolo can be available if the 49ers make a deep postseason run. Garoppolo injured his foot and ankle on a tackle in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins, opening the door for Purdy. Initial projections figured he could be healthy for the weekend of the NFC Championship on Jan. 29.

“That’s still the goal,” Shanahan said. “I think he can put a little weight on it, but he’s not out there running. It’s a little bit away.”

Even if Garoppolo is healthy, it'd be hard to see Shanahan putting him while Purdy would be rolling with at least one postseason victory under his belt. But having Garoppolo as a backup would certainly be an upgrade over Joshn Johnson.

Shanahan provided an update on Trey Lance as well, saying the quarterback had a second surgery to remove something inserted from his initial procedure. Lance has been out since Week 2 when he injured his foot and ankle against the Seattle Seahawks.

Shanahan said Lance has stayed positive despite the agonizing year on the sideline.

“Trey’s handled it great,” Shanahan said. “As good as any injured player I’ve ever been around. He stays positive, he comes off the right way. But I know it’s a challenge for him. … He’s feeling great now with his rehab. I know he can’t wait to get to this offseason.”
