Kyle Shanahan provides 49ers injury updates after preseason opener vs. Raiders

The 49ers made it out of their first preseason game without any more injuries, but coach Kyle Shanahan gave reporters an extensive update on his team’s health during a conference call Monday.

The team is hoping to get back some reinforcements this week, as players like running back Elijah Mitchell (adductor strain), linebacker Dre Greenlaw (hamstring), wide receiver Danny Gray (hip abductor), defensive end Drake Jackson (hamstring), defensive tackle Kalia Davis (hamstring) and edge rusher Robert Beal (unknown) are expected to return. Shanahan said tight end George Kittle (adductor strain) will be held out another week.

Still, Shanahan was more excited about getting through Sunday’s 34-7 loss to the Raiders without any major dings.

“It was a very bright spot of the week,” Shanahan said. “It’s usually the No. 1 goal in those preseason games. We didn’t lose anybody in that game.”

First-string quarterback Brock Purdy is also scheduled to practice three days in a row this week after going two days in a row with a rest day to begin camp.

Looking ahead to Week 1, Shanahan said he hopes linebacker Oren Burks and safety George Odum will be able to return from their respective injuries. Burks injured his PCL during a collision with Raiders receiver Davante Adams last week while Odum is dealing with a shoulder sprain.

Receiver Ray-Ray McCloud, who is recovering from surgery to his left wrist, was initially expected to miss about four games during the regular season. Now Shanahan said he has an outside shot at joining the team for Week 1.

“I do think he’s got a little worse odds than the other two guys,” Shanahan said.
