Mike McGlinchey out for year, injuries keep mounting for 49ers

Incredibly, the 49ers are dealing with another wave of injuries heading into Week 10.

49ers coach Kyle Shanahan laid out another injury report Monday, announcing that starting right tackle Mike McGlinchey will require season-ending surgery after tearing his quad in Sunday’s loss against the Arizona Cardinals.

“I thought Mike was doing a hell of a job coming off his last year,” Shanahan said, via the 49ers. “We saw some really good things from Mike his first two years. I think he knows, and we all know, he had a setback in his third season last year. Struggled at times and he's put in the work in the off season. I thought he's had a much better year, getting back to playing more how he did in his second year.”

The 49ers will have to go to their third-string free safety after Tavon Wilson (foot) looks to be headed to the injured reserve. Shanahan also said receiver Mohamed Sanu will be “out for a while” with a knee sprain.

Cornerback Josh Norman (rib) will be limited in practice this week and cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (ankle) is considered day-to-day. The secondary is truly hurting halfway through the season, considering starting safeties Jaquiski Tartt (knee) and Jimmie Ward (quad) didn’t play last week and cornerback Jason Verrett (ACL) is out for the year.

McGlinchey walked off the field Sunday against the Cardinals in the first half on his own accord but had a noticeable limp. Shanahan elected to use veteran Tom Compton at right tackle instead of rookie fifth-round pick Jaylon Moore, who filled in for Trent Williams on the left side in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts.

It appears Compton and Moore will be competing for the starting gig this weekend. Shanahan also said right guard Daniel Brunskill is also a consideration, but that the team is expecting Compton or Moore to fill the role.

“We'll see how we rep it this week, but probably won't announce that either until Sunday or unless someone's confirmed and I feel better on Wednesday or Thursday,” Shanahan said.

The 49ers haven’t got much from their early 2021 draft picks through the first half of their rookie years.

First-rounder Trey Lance has played in six quarters while backing up Jimmy Garoppolo and overcoming a knee sprain.

Second-round guard Aaron Banks has been “behind the eight ball” according to Shanahan after missing training camp time with a shoulder injury.

Third-round running backTrey Sermon was inactive for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals as Jeff Wilson Jr. returned from IR, behind seventh-round pick Elijah Mitchell and third-down back JaMycal Hasty.

“Jeff Wilson's back healthy and Elijah is healthy and those are our two starting backs right now with Trey being third and unfortunately, Hasty’s been our third down back and done the stuff in the pass game,” Shanahan said. “So, he's kind of been the odd man out with that, which is tough on him.”

Third-round cornerback Ambry Thoms has played in just nine snaps all year.

Fifth-round safety Talanoa Hufanga has been flying around the field and filling in for the injured secondary.

Mitchell, the team’s seventh-round pick, has been the most productive rookie with 469 yards and three touchdowns this season.
