No more worrying about his next contract. No more worrying about an injury wiping out his future bank account. Nick Bosa is a made man after officially signing his five-year, $170 million extension on Friday morning.
The $122.5 million guaranteed and $50 million signing bonus means Bosa can start shopping for a house in the Bay Area. It looks like he’s gonna be a Niner for at least the next six years.
Bosa met the media on Friday to discuss his huge extension and the emotions he’s feeling after locking up the biggest non-quarterback deal in NFL history.
“I’m definitely thinking that it’s gonna be a weight off my shoulders,” Bosa said. “Just gonna be able to not really think about all the negative thoughts that come along with playing this game. Just be free out there and play for one reason – to win games.”
When Bosa’s teammates like Fred Warner heard the news Wednesday afternoon, they were hooting and hollering in the locker room. Warner even did Bosa’s patented shrug celebration and rubbed his fingers together with fake money in the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.
During Friday’s practice, fellow d-linemen Arik Armstead and Drake Jackson made it rain, too. The Money Man is back.
Likewise, Bosa loved getting back to 49ers HQ in Santa Clara following a long summer of individual training in Florida.
“It was unbelievable,” Bosa said. “I’ve been waiting for that moment. That’s probably one of the biggest things I was excited for – to walk in the building and see all the guys. I know they have my back. Players have each other's back in this league, because it’s business at the end of the day. It was really cool to see everybody.”
Bosa arrived from Florida late Wednesday night and did individual work Thursday, before going through Friday’s half-speed session with his teammates. While he missed six weeks worth of training camp reps, Bosa has never played in the preseason for his career, so he’s used to getting his first game action of the season in Week 1.
The premiere edge rusher said he’s not sure what his snap count will be, but he wants to run it up like usual.
“I’m confident,” Bosa said. “I’m not sure what Kyle (Shanahan)’s plan is, but I’d be up for a normal workload, for sure. But I haven’t talked to him yet.”
For Shanahan, the contact isn’t an issue, as much as Bosa’s endurance. Bosa said he didn’t get any reps in against offensive linemen while working out on his own.
Shanahan didn’t reveal too much to reporters Friday, but said, “We got an idea how we’re gonna use him. I think he’s gonna do all right.”
