No Huddle podcast: The long-term effects of drafting Trey Lance

Ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, the 49ers used three first-rounders and a third-round pick to move up from the No. 12 slot to No. 3, in an effort to find their next franchise quarterback.

Two years later and we still haven’t seen much from Trey Lance, who has played in eight games, with four starts, attempting just 102 passes so far in the league. But the franchise unearthed a gem with the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, finding wunderkind Brock Purdy.

How will it all shake out this year? On the latest episode of 49ers Web Zone’s “No Huddle” podcast, the gang discussed the ramifications of missing on the Lance pick.

“People will say, ‘Well, the Niners missed on Lance, that’s OK they got Purdy in the seventh so it balances out,’” Al Sacco said. “Kinda doesn’t. Unless Purdy becomes a definite, franchise-type quarterback. Because you gave up the firsts for Lance, now you have guys you have to replace the next couple of years. You need a tackle, you need another edge, guys are getting older. You haven’t had first-round picks to do that.”
