Peter King: Brock Purdy shouldn't be defined by draft status

We’re still waiting for Brock Purdy to come back to Earth, as the 49ers quarterback is yet to lose a game he’s finished.

Still, there are doubters about the 23-year-old, who doesn’t have the big frame, big arm or big profile of the other signal-callers in the league.

Well, longtime NFL insider Peter King thinks it’s time to give Purdy his flowers. During his appearance on 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs” Monday, King said Purdy has proved he’s legit.

"Everybody says, 'Well he's done alright, but...' But, what? But, WHAT?” King told hosts Mark Willard and Dan Dibley. “Eleven games he's played three or more quarters, the 49ers are 11-0 and he's got numbers better than 2/3 of the quarterbacks in football. So what do you want exactly out of Brock Purdy?"

Purdy is still yet to shake the Mr. Irrelevant title after being the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, but King says there’s precedence for late-round picks to achieve greatness.

“We say, ‘Wait a second, Brock Purdy was the 262nd pick in the draft so he can't be very good.'” King said. “Haven't we learned our lesson? Tom Brady 199. Joe Montana, whatever he was, (82nd). Haven’t we learned our lesson? Same thing right now with Puka Nacua, 177th pick in the draft this year. People can’t accept that he’s a really good football player, because they’re myopically looking at the number pick he was overall. I think, watch the games and make a judgment. Don't make a final judgment on a human being, because the number next to him is a low number in the draft."
