The Raiders might have left Oakland for Las Vegas a few years ago, but they’ve still got some loyal die-hards in the Bay Area.
So, Sunday’s preseason opener was sweet for Raider Nation, as their squad handed the 49ers a 34-7 loss at Allegiant Stadium.
Earlier this week, some Raiders fans in San Jose held a mock candlelight vigil at the Deebo Samuel mural outside the Shoe Palace on South Bascome Avenue. Fan @RaiderJesse408 shared a video of the vigil on Instagram, as posters on the wall read, "RIP NINER EMPIRE" and "IT'S JUST PRESEASON".
Between their two stints in Oakland, from 1960-81 and again from 1995-2019, the Raiders spent 37 years in the Bay Area. The two fanbases enjoyed a fierce rivalry while both teams were in The Bay and there’s clearly still no love lost.
Last season, when the two teams met on New Year’s Day in Sin City, the 49ers needed overtime to snatch a 37-34 win against the Raiders, who got a stellar game from quarterback Jarrett Stidham.
Even though Sunday’s game was a meaningless preseason exhibition, Raiders fans are still having fun dancing on the grave of the 49ers while they can.
