Report: 49ers' Christian McCaffrey could miss 6 weeks

The news on San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey continues to get more concerning by the day.

The 49ers placed McCaffrey on injured reserve Saturday due to calf tightness and Achilles tendinitis, ruling the star out for the next four games before being re-evaluated.

On Sunday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that McCaffrey "may need as much as 6 weeks to heal." McCaffrey is eligible to return for Week 6 against the Seattle Seahawks, but should he need two additional weeks, he would miss the Super Bowl rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs and return for the team's showdown against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8.

McCaffrey did not practice Friday after being limited for the previous five practices. Earlier in the week, national reporters Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport of ESPN and NFL Network, respectively, reported it was unlikely McCaffrey would play Sunday in Minneapolis.

Kyle Shanahan ruled out McCaffrey for Sunday and said that he had his "worst day" Thursday with pain and discomfort. Injured reserve -- something Shanahan openly scoffed at on Wednesday -- is now something the 49ers are "considering."
