Report: 49ers sign former Raiders edge rusher Clelin Ferrell

The 49ers continue to reshuffle their defensive front.

A day after reportedly losing edge rushers Samson Ebukam and Charles Omenihu to free agent deals, San Francisco reportedly agreed to a one-year contract Wednesday with former Raiders first-rounder Clelin Ferrell, who hasn’t lived up to his billing as the No. 4 overall pick from 2019.

Listed at 6-foot-4, 265 pounds, Ferrell recorded a career-high 4.5 sacks as a rookie but hasn’t topped 2.0 in a season since. The 49ers are hoping that defensive line guru Chris Kocurek will be able to unlock his full potential.

Players like Ebukam, Omenihu and Arden Key have been able to thrive in San Francisco and get paid elsewhere, so perhaps Ferrell will follow a similar path. He figures to compete with 2022 second-rounder Drake Jackson for the starting edge role opposite DPOY Nick Bosa.

Ferrell joins a defensive line that also added defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and retained Kevin Givens, but lost Ebukam, Omenihu and defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway to free agency.
