Brock Purdy was supposed to go under the knife Wednesday, but those plans are tentatively on hold.
The injured 49ers quarterback met with Texas Rangers team Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday in a scheduled check-up, but the surgeon reportedly recommended to delay the procedure. According to reports, Purdy is still experiencing swelling in his right elbow after tearing his UCL in the NFC Championship on Jan. 29.
NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero first broke the news via Twitter on Tuesday night, while also sharing some more details about the expected procedure.
According to Pelissero, the 49ers are still hopeful he will be ready for the season opener, which would mean a six-month recovery if he undergoes surgery in early March. The NFL season starts on Sept. 7, so there's little margin of error for Purdy at this point. The good news: It seems Purdy is still avoiding full reconstruction surgery (aka Tommy John surgery) which could shelf his entire 2023 season.
So, where does Trey Lance stand in his respective rehab?
The third-year quarterback is still recovering from two surgeries to his foot/ankle after getting injured in Week 2 last year. According to The Athletic’s David Lombardi, Lance will run and start doing drop backs this weekend.
This latest news about Purdy only seems to enhance the chances of Lance being the QB1 in Week 1, but we’ll have to see how both of them progress. It always made sense for the 49ers to find a cheap, veteran backup quarterback and/or to draft one, but this news only solidifies that notion.
As is an annual tradition at this point, the 49ers quarterback situation will be a hot topic all summer leading into the season.
