The 49ers lost a front-office rising star Wednesday but gained some additional draft capital in the process.
According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, the Tennessee Titans are hiring 49ers director of player personnel Ran Carthon as their new general manager. Under the NFL’s initiative to promote minority general manager and head coach hires, the 49ers will receive compensatory third-round draft picks in 2023 and 2024.
Carthon has been with the team for seven seasons in the personnel department during the John Lynch/Kyle Shanahan era, the past two in his current role. He started as a scout with the Atlanta Falcons from 2008-11 before also working with the Rams from 2012-16.
The Niners could be adding more draft capital this offseason. Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans has four interviews lined up this week for possible head-coaching gigs, reportedly with the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts. The Carolina Panthers are also in the hunt for a new head coach.
If Ryans is hired, as expected, the 49ers would also receive a third-round compensatory pick in 2025, according to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows.
The 49ers have had a lot of success developing minority coaches and executives in recent years. They also received compensatory picks for the departures of Robert Saleh, Martin Mayhew and Mike McDaniel in recent years.
San Francisco traded away its 2023 first-rounder to acquire Trey Lance and 2023 second-, third- and fourth-round picks to acquire Christian McCaffrey. The 49ers also acquired a 2023 fifth-round pick in exchange for Jeff Wilson Jr. earlier this year. NFL.com projects that the 49ers will receive a fifth-round pick and a seventh-round pick to be compensated for free agent losses from last season.
