Santa Clara won't allow fans at 49ers' games 'anytime soon'

State had opened the door for limited return

So much for that.

Shortly after the news that California was clearing the way for fans to return to live sporting events, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department has slammed the door on that idea, at least as it relates to teams in their jurisdiction, such as the 49ers.

Earlier in the afternoon, the 49ers had appeared to be on the path to having fans back at Levi's Stadium in the not-too-distant future.

The next game for which this new ruling would have come into effect is Nov. 5 when the 49ers welcome the Packers to Santa Clara for Sunday Night Football.

The 49ers had foreshadowed the county's position with with the following statement, via its official Twitter account:

With Levi's max capacity listed at 68,500, the 20 percent figure would represent 13,700 fans.
