De'Vondre Campbell's time with the 49ers is over. The veteran linebacker quit on his team Thursday night, refusing to enter the game after falling down the pecking order behind Dre Greenlaw and Dee Winters.
Kyle Shanahan confirmed Friday morning on a conference call that Campbell will not be with the team going forward.
"We're working through the semantics of exactly how to deal with it, but you guys heard from me last night, you guys heard from our players, his actions from the game just, it's not something you can do to your team or your teammates and still expect to be a part of our team," Shanahan said. "So, we're working through exactly the semantics of it right now, but we'll handle the situation appropriately.”
Shanahan was even clearer later and said he expects Campbell to be gone by next week. The 49ers will decide whether to suspend Campbell or cut him. The decision will likely be a financial one, based on what avenues the 49ers have available to them.
Campbell was clearly upset at his tumble down the pecking order, going from the 49ers' No. 2 linebacker to their No. 4 linebacker, behind both Greenlaw and Winters. None of his teammates defended his actions Thursday night.
