Stats show why 49ers fired special teams coordinator Brian Schneider [report]
The 49ers will need a new special teams coordinator. According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, San Francisco fired Brian Schneider after an abysmal season from its special teams unit.
San Francisco finished dead last in expected points added by a staggering, almost impossible to comprehend margin. They had a -63.8 EPA on special teams. The Baltimore Ravens, the second-worst team in the league, had a -38.7 mark. The 49ers were worst by nearly 25 points.
That's not just Jake Moody's misses, though. Their punt and kickoff coverage teams have been bottom of the barrel, too. And that's what gets to the heart of why Schneider was fired.
The 49ers were second in kick return average, a boost from putting Deebo Samuel back there. They were around middle of the pack on punt returns with a 9.4-yard-per-return average, mostly from Jacob Cowing.
At their core, though, the 49ers' special teams unit was undisciplined. They allowed explosives and failed to convert on easy opportunities, and that's why Schneider lost his job.
