Terrell Owens makes 'tongue in cheek' criticism of Deebo Samuel

The 49ers have not looked like themselves, and Deebo Samuel's performance has clearly come into question. The former All-Pro hasn't quite looked like himself, and he's not short on critics.

One of those critics? Terrell Owens. Owens joined the Morning Roast Thursday morning to discuss where the 49ers are at, and he was especially critical of Samuel.

Owens was asked about Jauan Jennings' production in the context of the 49ers' offense. He highlighted what Jennings has done, while saying the only thing he lacks is breakaway speed. He mentioned Kittle working through injuries, then got to Samuel.

"Deebo is not really playing up to Deebo's standards," Owens said. "Deebo, it seems like he's more focused on his pregame attire than he is actually the game. So again, if we can shift that focus, maybe that can energize and and create some more production from an offensive standpoint. Just kind of tongue in cheek with that."

If that is a joke, it's certainly an interesting way to phrase it. Owens' tone did not exactly seem sarcastic as he said it. As for Samuel, there are points of concern.

Amongst rushers with at least 25 carries on the season, Samuel has the third-lowest yards-per-carry average, at 2.9 yards per carry. He has the 13th-worst rush yards over expect mark in the league out of 280 players. He is, however, 18th in yards after catch over expected as a receiver.

It absolutely has to be noted that Owens' son, Terique, is on the 49ers' practice squad. It's a particularly interesting comment given that context.

Listen to Owens' full interview above. The segment in which he talks about Samuel is beyond the 16-minute mark.
