Longtime 49ers insider Matt Maiocco recently published a new ‘49ers Talk’ podcast for NBC Sports Bay Area and reported that the team has more faith in quarterback Trey Lance than ever.
But do the franchise’s actions back up that sentiment?
On the latest episode of Audacy Sports’ ‘The 415ers’ podcast, hosts Evan Giddings and Marc Grandi discussed how the 49ers are handling Lance as he enters his third NFL season.
“The actions don’t really match the words that we’re hearing,” Giddings said. “If in fact, you were in love with Trey Lance or you like Trey Lance more than you ever have – then why this offseason did you bring in, not one, by two new quarterbacks that you’ve discussed as being capable at any point this season – Sam Darnold and I’ll throw Brandon Allen in there because we’ve heard some wild rumors from him this offseason as well. …
“With the way that (Lance) was used last season and the way that he’s fallen out of favor and going from starting quarterback at the beginning of last season to potentially QB3 at the beginning of this season – there just seems to be something off. I can’t quite put my finger on it, Marc, but I don’t think the messaging that we’re hearing from the 49ers or the media about Trey Lance matches up with their actions.”
