Tim Kawakami explains why it's 'pretty clear' 49ers will extend Brock Purdy

The looming question going into the 49ers' 2025 offseason is just how much Brock Purdy is going to be paid. At 5-7, the focus is starting to swing clearly towards the offseason.

Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, and the TK Show and Warriors Plus/Minus on Audacy podcasts, joined Willard and Dibs Wednesday. He explained why the 49ers will likely extend Purdy at a high price.

"They value Brock Purdy," Kawakami said. "The big picture is that he's won a ton of games. He's put up huge stats. He's won four playoff games. These are things that are done, they are on the record books. You can't say that about very many quarterbacks in this league, and quarterbacks are expensive.

"They know this. If he had another great year like he had last season, maybe it's $60 million a year. You know you're going to have to pay it top of the market. Probably not that now, but again, he's going to ask for whatever he's going to ask for. If you turn away from Brock Purdy now, where are you? What, Sam Darnold's your quarterback next year? I don't think they want to go down that path. I think it's pretty clear that the future is Brock Purdy at quarterback."

Kawakami thinks the calculation might be different if the 49ers were thinking about another head coach, but he doesn't see the 49ers moving away from Kyle Shanahan. If it's Shanahan at coach, it'll be Purdy at quarterback.

"You're not getting a better quarterback than Brock Purdy," Kawakami said. "You're going to have to pay for it. If you can get it for less than $60 million, which is what I would imagine [it] could be, then you got to do it. You just have to do it. I just don't know that there's any other way to find a quarterback who better fits Kyle Shanahan's system. I don't think there's a better way to find a better head coach than Kyle Shanahan."
