The San Francisco 49ers are adding Brian Robinson after a trade with the Washington Commanders, ESPN reported Friday.
Washington is getting back a sixth-round pick in exchange for Robinson, who was a third-round pick by the Commanders in 2022.
Last season, Robinson rushed for 789 yards on 182 carries for 4.3 yards per carry and eight touchdowns over 12 games. He started and played in 15 games two seasons ago, putting up similar numbers but with four receiving touchdowns and 10.2 yards per catch.
In three seasons with the Commanders, Robinson averaged 4.1 yards per carry.
So the 49ers are getting a real asset in the running back room at a time when they definitely need it. Their backups have dealt with injuries at training camp and in the preseason.
Isaac Guerendo returned to practice Tuesday, but he's been managing a shoulder injury for much of camp. Patrick Taylor Jr. is out for the season with a shoulder injury and rookie Corey Kiner was carted off the field in Week 2 of the preseason with a high ankle sprain.
That leaves very little behind Christian McCaffrey, who's also dealt with his share of injuries in recent years.
