Trent Williams finalizing reworked deal with 49ers, ends holdout [reports]

Trent Williams will be back in the building. The future Hall of Famer left tackle has held out this entire offseason in search of a reworked contract to pay him as one of the league's top tackles.

On Tuesday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers and Williams began to finalize an agreement. It will get the All-Pro back in the building before the 49ers' three practices of the week, starting Thursday. The deal isn't finished, but it's close enough for him to get back to Santa Clara.

Williams' holdout cost him $2.05 million in training camp fines and another $3.34 million in fines for missing three preseason games. But with no guaranteed money remaining on his deal, Williams went for security beyond this year rather than worrying about the short-term cost.

There are also two news items of note. First, Schefter reports that Christian McCaffrey will return to practice Tuesday. He'd missed about a month with a calf injury.

Additionally, the 49ers restructured Maliek Collins' contract to create $5.432 million in cap space, per ESPN's Field Yates. Keep an eye on Collins' cap number of $8.47 million in 2024 decreasing and $10 million for 2025 (a previously fully-non-guaranteed figure) increasing in guarantees.
