49ers fans are dealing with the new reality that Trey Lance might never be a meaningful contributor in a San Francisco uniform.
On Wednesday, we found out that Sam Darnold beat out Lance for the QB2 spot behind Brock Purdy and Lance took a day off from practice to clear his head.
Looking back at the entire situation, 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast” duo of Bonta Hill and Joe Shasky think the 49ers mismanaged the Lance draft pick at No. 3 overall in 2021 to a historic degree. Lance needed to develop after his limited FCS college experience, but a finger injury in 2021 and foot/ankle injury in 2022 derailed his first two seasons.
SHASKY: A lot of other regimes, missing on one quarterback gets you fired.
BONTA: They’ve missed on like five so far.
SHASKY: But they’ve overcome it.
BONTA: They’ve overcome it. That’s what people keep telling me, so let's not panic right now, because they have overcame it. But we don’t even know if Trey Lance is ready to play in an NFL game. What I saw against the Las Vegas Raiders, I said it that Monday, ‘Oh my God, No. 5’s not ready to play in an NFL game. He can’t possibly start right now. He’s not ready to go.’
SHASKY: It’s, honest to God, one of the wildest miscalculations in draft history.
BONTA: It could be the worst draft pick in 49ers history. It could be one of the worst picks in NFL history and it’s not all on Trey. It’s on (Kyle) Shanahan, it’s on (John) Lynch. It’s everything.
SHASKY: It’s the process, it’s the selection, it’s the player, it’s the development.
BONTA: They botched the whole situation.
