San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance can now move forward in his first training camp.
The No. 3 overall pick out of North Dakota State signed his rookie contract with the 49ers on Wednesday, his agent announced.
Lance will receive a four-year, $34.1 million contract with a $22.2 million signing bonus, per the NFL’s rookie contract structure. The $34.1 million is guaranteed and the 49ers can pick up a fifth-year option after Lance’s third season.
Lance will be one of the major training camp storylines at 49ers camp this summer as many will be curious to see if there will indeed be a competition between him and Jimmy Garoppolo for the Week 1 starter.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday that Garoppolo is still the No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart and that there is “no open competition.”
Yet, if Lance performs well and impresses, Garoppolo’s hold on the No. 1 spot could be short-lived, even if he starts the season under center.
