Anthony DeSclafani leaves start with ankle injury

SAN FRANCISO (95.7 The Game) - San Francisco Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani was forced to exit his Wednesday afternoon start vs the New York Mets due to "right ankle discomfort," Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

The right-hander appeared to injure himself while covering first base on a ground ball to the right side of the infield in the second inning.

DeSclafani remained in the game to face the next hitter, infielder Jonathan Villar, who he walked on five pitches.

Manager Gabe Kapler and the club's trainer Dave Groeschner came out out of the dugout to check on DeSclafani and ultimately removed him from the game.

Any extended absence for the 31-year-old, who entered the game with a 3.29 ERA, would be a major blow for the Giants.

The Giants are already without Johnny Cueto (flexor strain), however, he could return to the rotation "soon," Pavlovic reports.

Sammy Long, Tyler Chatwood, Logan Ondrusek, Matt Shoemaker and Scott Kazmir are among the candidates to get more work depending on the severity of DeSclafani's injury.
