(670 The Score) Left-hander Carlos Rodon’s breakout 2021 season with the White Sox has landed him a big payday.
Rodon has agreed to a two-year, $44-million deal with the San Francisco Giants, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Friday. The deal includes an opt-out after the first year, Passan reported, giving Rodon a chance to re-enter the market next offseason to obtain an even bigger contract if he performs at a high level in 2022.
Rodon, 29, was an All-Star for the first time in 2021 after dealing with a series of injuries for years. He went 13-5 with a 2.37 ERA and 0.96 WHIP while striking out 12.6 batters per nine innings. He logged 132 2/3 innings across 24 starts. His workload diminished in the second half of the season as the White Sox looked to keep him fresh.
In San Francisco, Rodon will be a frontline starter for a Giants team that won 107 games and the NL West crown last season before falling to the rival Dodgers in the NL Division Series.
Rodon underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2019, costing him the rest of that season and most of 2020. He also underwent left shoulder surgery in 2017. Rodon has a 3.79 ERA in his seven-year MLB career.
Adding more pitching is a priority for the White Sox, general manager Rick Hahn said earlier Friday. That need has now become more important with Rodon’s exit.
