San Francisco Giants rookie Casey Schmitt started his big-league career with a bang. The infielder hit a home run in his debut on May 9th and that was just the beginning.
Schmitt sat down with the Audacy Original Podcast “Garlic Fries and Baseball Guys” host Sam Lubman to talk about his stellar start and how he’s acclimating to the major leagues.
“It’s been crazy coming to the ballpark every day and being around everyone. I take every moment in and I’m enjoying all of it,” Schmitt said. “It’s so much fun.”
Schmitt joined Hall of Famer Willie McCovey as the only two Giants players to record eight hits in their first three MLB games. The 24-year-old started his career on a five-game hit streak with hits in nine of his first 10 contests.
“Any time you’re mentioned in the same sentence as someone like that it’s amazing, it’s mindblowing,” he said. “I’m trying to just come out and have fun every single day and letting everything else take care of itself. It’s been a crazy ride. I’m just really enjoying it.”
The young infielder knows that baseball is a marathon, not a sprint, and he’s taking it day by day.
“Baseball’s a game of failure. It’s a really tough game,” Schmitt said. “For me, I try to be as relaxed as I can, if possible, I try to be the same person every single day whether I’m 4-for-4 or 0-for-4. I think carrying myself like that has helped me a lot.”
It’s an exciting time for the Giants as Schmitt is one of several young players finding success in San Francisco.
“It’s a special moment just to look over and see them and see all of the older guys, too,” Schmitt said. “It’s been amazing.”
