The Giants have added some speed to their outfield. San Francisco claimed former Texas Rangers outfielder Derek Hill after Hill was designated for assignment over the weekend.
A first-round selection by Texas at No. 23 overall in 2014, Hill hasn't made much of an impact at the MLB level. The 28-year-old outfielder is a career .232 hitter in the majors, but offers base-stealing potential.
With Triple-A Round Rock, Hill has hit eight home runs and slashed .350/.415/.631 this season over 176 plate appearances while stealing seven bases. He has 193 career steals in the minors and 12 in the majors.
He is out of minor league options, so if he doesn't produce with the Giants on their roster, he'll likely be DFA'd, too. As it stands, a corresponding move will have to come, and it could be Luis Matos.
