Giants place Matt Chapman on 10-day IL with right hand injury

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman is on the 10-day injured list with right hand inflammation, the team announced Tuesday.

The injury happened Sunday when Chapman jammed his throwing hand by diving back to first base late in the game against the Atlanta Braves.

In response to Chapman being placed on the IL, the Giants called up infielder Christian Koss from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of Tuesday night's road series opener against the Colorado Rockies.

As for Chapman, the good news is X-rays came back negative, so there doesn't appear to be anything broken at first glance. However, Chapman said he did feel his hand stiffen after the game and initially feared there could have been damage to the ligaments in his index, middle and ring fingers.

It bothered Chapman that he was both picked off and hurt his hand, but now it's just time to recover. He carries an .812 OPS and a team-high 12 home runs in 65 games this season.
