Logan Webb sits in a unique space with his Bay Area sports fandom.
He’s the Giants’ opening day starter, but he grew up rooting for the A’s, Kings and Raiders. So when he was on the big screen in Las Vegas for the New Year’s Day matchup between the 49ers and Raiders, he found himself in a tough spot.
Webb didn’t wanna upset the 49ers/Giants fans, but he had to stay true to his Silver and Black roots. So he ditched the Raiders jersey and just wore a hat. The large contingent of 49ers fans in attendance apparently didn’t like seeing Webb supporting the Raiders.
During his appearance on 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs” Friday, Webb explained what it felt like to be on the big screen with so many Bay Area fans in attendance.
“I purposely didn’t wear a Raiders jersey that day. I didn’t want it to be too much. I know that Niners fans don’t like that I am a Raiders fan. But I did have a hat on. In the moment, Raiders fans weren’t cheering for me as much. They’re fans of some other teams, but I was just in the moment and I kinda pointed at my hat and all the Raiders fans got up, ‘Yeah! Let’s go!’ It was fun. That was funny interacting with fans. I’m sorry, that’s the team I grew up with."
Now the Raiders have added former 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, officially introducing him with a press conference on Friday. Garoppolo is signed to a three-year, $72.8 million contract with $45 million guaranteed. Webb is excited to see how Jimmy G can succeed Derek Carr while reuniting with former QB coach/offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who is now the Raiders head coach.
"He’s a proven winner and he wins a lot," Webb said. "I hope he can stay healthy. When he’s healthy and doing his thing, I think McDaniels will have a good system for him. I’m excited to see that connection again."
Webb grew up in Rocklin, Calif., which is just about a half hour away from Sacramento, so he’s stoked to see the Kings sitting in the West's No. 2 seed. He also didn’t agree with Willard’s description of the Kings being “adorable.”
"They’re not out there acting like jackasses,” Webb said. “They do things right. They score and score, and then they’re gonna score a little bit more. It’s fun to watch. I don’t think it’s ‘adorable,’ I just think they’re pretty damn good."
