Madison Bumgarner threw a no-hitter for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
Or did he?
The veteran southpaw tossed seven no-hit innings in a 7-0 win over the Braves in the second game of the Diamondbacks’ doubleheader on Sunday.
It is the first unofficial shortened no-hitter in MLB history since Devern Hansack allowed no hits in a five-inning game since the Red Sox in 2006.
Because doubleheaders are only seven innings this year, the no-hit performance technically does not count as an official no-hitter in the MLB record books.
This prompted discussion on social media, from the Diamondbacks official account to Audacy MLB Insider Jon Heyman, arguing that Bumgarner’s seven inning no-no should absolutely count.
Meanwhile, others took the moment to bash MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, while Bumgarner thanked the commissioner himself.
What do you think? Should Bumgarner’s no-hitter count or not?
