The 2010s Giants will always be defined by Buster Posey and great arms like Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner. Oh, and those three championships.
Shortly after The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly broke the news about Posey’s imminent retirement, Cain joined 95.7 The Game’s “Damon & Ratto” to reflect on his former catcher’s great career. You can listen to the full interview below:
Cain shared a funny anecdote Wednesday about the pitching staff’s trust in Posey.
“A handful of us trusted him so much, he would come up to the mound and ask us, ‘What do we wanna throw here,’” Cain said. “We were all, like, wait a minute. We took the Bumgarner line. Bumgarner’s like, ‘Well you’re smarter than me. You put it down there, I’ll throw it.’
“That’s actually kinda true. We trusted in him and he had a great feel for the game. We had a lot of faith in what he did back there.”

Cain also reflected on his perfect game from 2012, when Posey helped him mow through 27 straight Houston Astros.
“It was really just business as usual,” Cain said. “I never shook. I never questioned a thing. That was probably the best part of it, I never got in my own way. I just kept on letting him do his thing and I was just trying to stay in a rhythm. But it was like I had complete faith.
“I even look back at some of the pitches, like, wait, we threw that in that count? Geez. But that’s what Buster did.”
Posey is scheduled to announce his retirement Thursday afternoon at Oracle Park.
