Could the Giants play bridesmaid to the Yankees once again?
Longtime ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney joined 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs” Friday to share his latest intel on the Carlos Correa situation. Correa is the biggest fish left in the pond, and Olney thinks the Yankees might one-up the Giants in negotiations again.
“The team I’m watching at the moment? The Yankees,” Olney told hosts Mark Willard and Dan Dibley. “I’m definitely picking up a lot of vibes there. Yeah, they signed Aaron Judge to a $360 million deal, but they’re working on something big. I wish I could tell you exactly what that was. But, Carlos Correa, let’s face it, among the available free agents, that would be the biggest way to go.”
Now that Aaron Judge is staying put in the Bronx and Xander Bogaerts is headed to San Diego, there’s pressure building on Farhan Zaidi and the Giants to make a big splash at McCovey Cove. But Olney isn’t hearing much progress out of San Francisco.
“From what I understand, the Giants haven’t gotten deeply into the conversation yet, in terms of dollars,” Olney said. “They met with Correa down in San Diego and Scott Boras represents him. They had teams going through his suite. The teams that we talked about so much are the Cubs, the Twins, who had Carlos last year, they want him back. The Red Sox, in theory, have a shortstop.”
Earlier this week, the Yankees signed Judge to a nine-year, $360 million contract that matched a reported offer from San Francisco. For 2023 Opening Day, it sounds like a real possibility that Mitch Hangier and the Giants could be facing a Yankees lineup featuring Judge and Correa.
