Re: The Golden State Warriors. We know nothing. None of us. Stop trying to figure it out and just experience whatever the hell it is they're doing.
It is so perfectly this team that they went to Dallas with only nine players, none of them over 6-7, and not only won by 31, they scored more points than they have all year, outrebounded the Mavericks and were led in scoring by the guy furthest from Stephen Curry in offensive impact.
In short, every assumption you made about this team has turned out to be wrong yet again, which means that what you have here is a team that exists mostly to make you feel bad about all your basketball conceits.
There's nothing wrong with that, of course. It actually makes them more fun in a bizarre way because they are still trying to figure out who and what they are, so they may as well make you figure it out too.
In running up 147 points on a weirdly underachieving Dallas team with Luka Doncic and not much else, the Warriors established yet again the one thing no other team has done — how to always be different than the last time they played. The margin of victory in their 22 games is the highest in the league, 16.4 points per game, which is to say this: They have won by 31 points twice, by 27, by 22 twice and by 15, and have lost by 39, 26, 25, 21, 19 and 15.
To put this another way, they've been excellent six times, horrible six times and slightly better than average the other 10 times. Moreover, there is no pattern to when they do what they do save one — they beat bad teams. They are 9-1against teams with losing records, and 3-9 against good ones. In every other way, they are profoundly erratic, unpredictable against any form. It makes one wonder if Steve Kerr spends his spare time trying to unscrew his head, after five years of winning 77 percent of his games and one year of losing 77 percent.
So in a world when Kelly Oubre can outshoot Stephen Curry and Juan Toscano Anderson can have more rebounds than anyone else on the floor, last night's piefight is not weird at all, but in keeping with who they actually are — the strangest team worth looking at in the entire NBA. In other words, assume nothing about Saturday's game in Dallas. All the same conditions will be in play, so the game will bear no resemblance to last night's. That's one thing you can bank on in a season that should have animated and stuck on Adult Swim.
