(SportsRadio 610) - The Texans have been working on a different marketing strategy and aim to improve the look of their uniforms and overall brand.
Houston media was invited to NRG on Thursday night to take in a sneak-peek of what that might look like in the not too distant future.
I was expecting a slide show with some pictures of prototypes and other teasers along with some generalized explanations as to the thought process and reasoning behind the impetus for change.
Instead, I felt like I was on a panel of some kind of committee in charge of granting the go-ahead for a multi-million dollar decision.
That was cool.
While I can't give any details as to the specifics of change that will occur, I can honestly report that the Texans, from a marketing perspective, are taking fan input very seriously and have the best interest of the city and fan base at heart.
It's for you Houston, and come April of 2024, you're going to be proud.
Heart, Hustle and H-town proud.
We love our city. There is so much about it that makes it special.
The history, the people, the culture and the grit and strength we show as a community when times are the darkest.
How can the Texans embody all of those aforementioned qualities and evolve into the future while paying homage to its past?
How can the Houston Texans best represent the city in which it plays?
How can they restore the pride that a once loyal and vibrant fan base felt?
They want to encapsulate all of those things that make Houston great, and while there will be change, how much remains to be seen.
They're listening to you Houston. They even acknowledged the creative concepts that routinely make their way around on social media. Keep it up. They're paying attention.
Ultimately, this one is going to be for you.
No decision on colors, uniforms or logos have been made. However, while the process is still evolving and ideas continue to circulate, creative minds will soon be making them a reality.
In the meantime, the most important and pivotal off-season in the franchise's history is underway and there's plenty that CEO Cal McNair and general manager Nick Caserio have to get right in the coming days, weeks and months.
The search for a new head coach and better players via the draft and free agency is paramount with young, innovative and exciting coaching candidates along with 11 draft choices and top 10 money to spend in free agency.
They have to get a lot of that right, and there's no guarantee they will.
There's plenty to not feel good about right now. There's not many reasons to trust anyone to do their job well because of the track record, lack of transparency amongst other major issues that have plagued the front office.
However, I left NRG Thursday evening impressed and encouraged because I think they can't get this type of change wrong.
The Texans senior vice president of marketing and communications, Doug Vosik, presented for over an hour and knocked it out if the park.
Vosik, along with team president Greg Grissom used the term, "fearlessly evolve" a number of times during the course of the evening and even credited McNair for the movement.
McNair, admittedly, is a traditionalist. He doesn't like a lot of change. Particularly with the look of his football team and their brand.
Which made the evening that much more interesting.
Given his thinking and comfort level with the overall look of the organization, he's now being credited with leading the charge for change.
It's not something that always needed to happen, but given the circumstances and downward spiral of the organization over the last three seasons, the timing could not be more perfect for evolving.
Drastically.
Look good, feel good. Feel good, play good.
Let's hope there is something to that saying.
