(SportsRadio 610) - With the Texans narrowing their head coaching finalists down to two, it is increasingly more likely they hire retired NFL quarterback Josh McCown to fill the vacancy.

McCown and former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores are the last two remaining candidates who have not been ruled out. Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon had been among them as a finalist, but was reportedly informed over the weekend he would not be getting the job.

Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin joined Payne & Pendergast on Friday morning to discuss the lawsuit Flores, who is Black, recently filed against the NFL alleging racist hiring practices. They also talked about the prospect of the Texans hiring McCown, who is white and has never coached beyond high school, over a decorated NFL defensive coach in Flores.

"This Josh McCown thing, everybody's projecting him to be some great guru of a coach, yet he has not really done any coaching, which blows my mind," Irvin said. "Can you handle those personalities? Can you reach down inside that kid and bring out this king? Can you motivate? Can you push? And we don't know what the hell Josh McCown can do? And we're just talking about throwing him up in the midst of all this Brian Flores stuff.

"When we talk about earning jobs on merit, that's what this hold thing is. That's what Brian Flores is arguing about and to throw out Josh McCown like this, it would be wild."
